VARIOUS TYPES OF MASSAGE:



 VARIOUS TYPES OF MASSAGE:

1.       According to direction:
Ayurvedic massage - away from the heart.
Swedish massage – Towards the heart.

2.      According to material used:

 Dry massage – By using hands only.
Powder massage – Medicated powder are used.
Oil massage – oils are used.

Swedish massage has 7 movements: 
1.      Touch
2.       Stroking
3.      Friction
4.       Kneading
5.       Percussion
6.      Vibration
7.       Joint movements.

Methods:

1.      Touch:
  
      Hands of the masseur come in contact with the patient. It is of three types.

Passive touch - Gives comfort reduces pain and nervous irritability.
Pressive touch – Reduces pain and increases blood supply.
Nerve compression – Done by hands and fingers, anesthetic effect, stimulates muscles.

2.      Stroking:  
       It is touch with movement in single direction.

Digital stroking, palmer stroking, knuckle stroking.
This movement 2-3 per second it has got sedative effect and beneficial in hypersensitivity.

3.      Friction:

      Hands are moved with considerable force.

Centripetal: Towards the heart.
Centrifugal: Away from heart.
Spiral: Done in spiral shape.
Rotator: Rotator movement is done.
Improves:  Circulation reduces local infection and generates heat.      

4.      Kneading:
 
Superficial: Superficial structures are pulled by using thumb and index finger.
Petressage: Hold the muscle and pull it away from bone.
Rolling: Pull the muscle and move away from origin and insertion.
Increase the elasticity of the muscle, skin functions and blood circulation.

5.      Percussion: 

      Wrist of the hand is made lose and movement must be from wrist joint. Elastic blows should be used with various degree of force.

Tapping: With the finger tips.
Clapping: Hands made in to cup  shape and used for massage.
Beating: Fingers are bent and loosely held.
Patting: Slow beats with palmer surface.
Contractibility of muscles gets enhanced heat and vibration in the body.

6.      Vibration:

Superficial, deep, rapid shaking or trembling movements on skin surface without breaking contact. Fingers or palms are used.

7.      Joint Movements: 

      To prevent restricted joint movements and stiffness.
Stretching, flexing, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction, medial and lateral rotation.
