ABHYANGA



ABHYANGA

It is defined as the process of application of oil over the body with certain amount of pressure in specific direction. The word abhyanga is derived from two words abhi and anyana. Abhi means towards, into, over, upon, etc. anjana means to smear, to anoint Rubbing with unctuous substance.

Alomg with bruhatrayees, yagaratnakara and bhavaprakasha had explained about abhyanga. Epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata had described oil massage for health maintenance.



  • Abhyanga should be practiced regularly –

Vayu dominates in tactile sensory organs which are lodged in skin. Oil massage is exceedingly beneficial to skin. So one should practice it daily.

  • When abhyanga should be practiced?

After having desire for food and drinks the person should take abhayanga using oils which possess the property of mitigating vata, good smell, suitable to the season and pleasant to touch.
