CONCEPT OF MASSAGE:

Definition:
Massage is the scientific –method of manipulating the soft tissues of body including skin, tendons and muscles by applying pressure on the specific parts of the body.

Derivation:
Massage is derived from greek word ‘ masso’ / massein meaning to touch/ handle/ to knead/ to squeeze.

Historical review

Massage therapy is recognized as one of oldest method of healing. Hippocrates father of medicine has practiced massage and quoted in his texts in 4th century B.C. As ‘the physician must be acquainted with many things and assuredly with rubbing’
Roman and Greek physicians prescribed massage both for its restorative powers and physio psychological health. Ancients Greeks have set up massage schools in their gymnasium for maintaining health and treating diseases.
In 16th century French doctor Ambrosi Pare used different massage treatment for much illness. In 19th century Swedish doctor Per Henrik Ling developed Swedish massage.
